Why Consider Scar Removal Treatment?
Facial scars, especially acne scars, are left behind to remind us of the tissue damage caused and the body’s effort to repair that damage. Scarring is often worsened in acne patients when the acne is "popped" or picked at with fingers or sharp objects. With this additional injury to the skin, further inflammation is caused and the immune system has to work very hard to try and repair the tissue damage, often leading to unsightly scars. Scar removal treatments will minimize the visibility of scars, allowing you to improve your self-esteem and no longer struggle to cover up the scars when you find yourself in public.
How Does Scar Removal Work?
Scar removal treatments can be accomplished with a variety of procedures. Including:
- Laser Scar Removal: A fractional CO2 laser treatment, also known as laser skin resurfacing, is applied to the deep levels of skin to stimulate new collagen growth. The newly formed collagen fills in facial scars and provides a more, even smoother facial appearance. The procedure also removes the top layer of skin, exposing the healthy skin underneath.
- Photofacial: A photofacial procedure or IPL treatment is accomplished by applying intense pulse light to the skin. The skin then regenerates over a few days, thereby removing facial and acne scars.
- Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion is great for mild acne scars. During the procedure dead skin cells are removed, triggering the body to heal itself. However, to achieve results, several treatment sessions may be required.
- Chemical Peels: A chemical peel cleans the skin, opens the pores and removes the top superficial layers of skin. It is an excellent scar removal option for patients who have mild to moderate acne scars.
Scar Removal Recovery and Aftercare
Scar removal recovery depends on which treatment option you decide to pursue. However, none of the scar removal treatments we offer will require any downtime. You may experience skin peeling with laser skin resurfacing, IPL and a chemical peel, but this usually happens over a period of one to two days.
The most important part of your aftercare is to take care of your skin by protecting it from the sun and adopting a new, healthy skin care regiment. Our doctor and his staff will provide you with detailed instructions for best results.
At your scar removal consultation, Dr. Tirgari will examine your scars and talk to you about the procedures he recommends. You will be informed about pre-treatment preparations as well as aftercare. In many cases, scar removal patients will need more than one treatment session to achieve optimal results. We are confident that we can help you, so please call us today.
Additional Scar Removal Information
Scar Removal for Active Acne
Severe acne scars are typically comprised of bigger, raised areas of scarring next to areas of active acne inflammation. Acne scars in general are the visible remainders of tissue damage to the skin and the body’s efforts to repair the damage from prior acne inflammation. Acne scarring can also occur as a result of "popping" the pimple or picking at the skin with their fingers or other rough instruments, such as needles. With this additional damage to the skin, the body’s immune system works even harder trying to repair the damage. As a result, acne scars often occur. With skin "popping", these can be even more prominent since additional bacteria enter the region from this activity and induce more inflammation.
During laser acne scar treatment, laser energy is applied to target lower layers of the skin, stimulating new collagen growth. This helps minimize the scar as well as diminish surface irregularities. The procedure also removes the top layer of dead skin cells, which can block pores. This exposes a more healthy skin layer.
