Cellulite is a condition where fat under the skin pushes against the connective tissue causing the skin on the surface to appear bumpy and ridged. Cellulite can affect patients of various weights and sizes and does not necessarily mean the patient is over weight or obese. Patients that experience this condition may suffer from poor diet, fad diets, bad genetics, slow metabolism, lack of physical activity, hormonal changes, dehydration, total body fat, and poor skin elasticity. Cellulite also tends to be more noticeable on women with lighter skin tones.

Some of the most popular treatments for cellulite include cellulite creams, liposuction, mesotherapy, spa treatments and laser therapy. Cellulite creams are said to dissolve fat and smooth the skin, however there is no evidence or studies that prove the effectiveness of these creams and since many contain aminophylline, a drug that treats asthma, they may be dangerous for some patients with circulatory and allergy problems.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that physically removes fat deposits from the body. Since liposuction removes the fat and not the cellulite, the American Academy of Dermatology warns that liposuction may increase the appearance of cellulite by creating deeper depressions in the skin.

Mesotherapy uses vitamin, mineral, amino acids and enzyme injections to break down the fat which causes the appearance of cellulite. Mesotherapy is mostly popular in Europe and has side effects such as swelling, infection and excess fluid.

Laser treatments, such as Velashape have been extremely successful in treating cellulite. Velashape is one of the only devices FDA approved to safely and effectively contour the body and help patients melt the fat which causes cellulite. Velashape uses a combination Bi Polar RadioFrequency, infrared light energy, vacuum and mechanical massage to help the body naturally metabolize the fat and redistributes the fat cells that cause cellulite to appear. To achieve the best results, Avalon Laser recommends a series of at least six treatments one week apart.
