As we age out bodies may begin to change in unflattering ways. Our skin loses its elasticity and fat can begin to accumulate in areas that we find embarrassing. One such area excess fat can develop is beneath the chin, otherwise known as a double chin. For years, the traditional means for addressing this area was with a neck lift or liposuction, but recently, a new FDA-approved injectable called Kybella®, offers a non-surgical means for treating double chins.
At Avalon Laser our dual board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Reza Tirgari and his staff are happy to offer this treatment to help with unsightly fat deposits under the chin. If you would like to learn more about this procedure, contact us today at (844) 321-1138 for your complimentary initial consultation. We proudly serve those in San Diego, Carlsbad, and Del Mar, California.
What is Kybella®?
Kybella® uses deoxycholic acid to separate and absorb the fat deposits under the chin. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally-occurring acid in the body which metabolizes and dissolves fat from food sources. Because of this, most patients have no adverse reactions to Kybella® treatments.
Kybella® is injected directly into the fatty areas under the chin and begins to work by destroying the fat cells located in that region. As the fat cells are destroyed, they are gone permanently, giving you long-lasting results. Since its approval by the FDA in 2015, Kybella® has been instrumental in helping people reduce fat and achieving better tones and contours in their chin.

Benefits of Kybella®
For those who want a non-surgical solution to remove excess fat from under the chin, Kybella® is the perfect solution. There are many benefits to this treatment, which include:
- Non-surgical with no incisions or sutures needed
- No anesthesia
- Long-lasting results
- No scarring
- No downtime or recovery period after procedure
The Kybella® Treatment
During your consultation, a thorough examination of your medical history and any current medical conditions you may have will help to determine if you’re a candidate for this procedure. Once cleared, you will be given a series of Kybella® injections to the affected area. Each treatment session may require up to 20 injections, depending on the amount of the fat deposits, and should only take around 20 minutes to complete. You’ll be able to return to work or home with no recovery period needed after each procedure.
Two to six treatment sessions may be needed to maximize results and permanently destroy all fat cells under the chin. These treatments will be spaced one month apart from each other to allow proper recovery of the affected area. In some cases, minor bruising or swelling in the area may occur, but these should be relatively short-lived and disappear within a couple days of the procedure. While the results may not be immediately noticeable, the treatment is working and you will begin to enjoy long-lasting results shortly after your treatments.
Who Can Receive Kybella®?
Kybella® uses a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, which naturally occurs in the body to destroy dietary fat. For that reason, this treatment is safe for most adults over the age of 18. Although, as with any surgery, certain factors may prohibit you from having this procedure. Before having this treatment, consult with your doctor if any of the following applies to you:
- Have had or plan to have neck, chin, or face surgery
- Have had previous treatments on your face or neck
- Any medical conditions on your face or neck
- Have ever had trouble swallowing
- Any bleeding problems
- On any medications, especially blood thinners
- Are pregnant or plan to be pregnant
- Are breastfeeding
